At Rock Fall UK, a family-owned safety footwear manufacturer based in Derbyshire, England, we are committed to providing the ultimate in safety footwear, comfort and durability. That’s why we believe it’s time to have a direct conversation about the materials we use and the words we use to describe them. In the world of footwear, the debate around vegan leather vs real leather is increasingly common, but we feel it’s fundamentally misleading. We believe these two words should not be paired together, as they represent materials that are fundamentally and structurally different.
What Makes Leather, Leather?
Leather is a natural material with an unparalleled set of properties that have been trusted for centuries. It’s a fibrous structure that allows it to breathe naturally, regulating temperature and moisture to keep your feet comfortable on the job. This inherent breathability is a defining characteristic of our footwear, enhancing comfort over long hours of wear.
Leather is also incredibly durable, adapting to the shape of your foot over time to provide a custom fit that synthetics cannot replicate. It can be revived and conditioned, extending the life of the boot and making it a sustainable investment. The unique feel, look, and performance of leather come from its natural origin — a property that no manufactured material has ever truly replicated.
Understanding “Vegan Leather”
Most materials marketed as “vegan leather” are plastics, primarily composed of or coated with polyurethane (PU), a petroleum-derived polymer. While these materials can mimic the surface appearance of traditional leather, their core composition is fundamentally different. They do not share the same fibrous, natural structure as leather and therefore do not break in or conform to the foot in the same way over time.

Plant-Based Materials: An Evolving Landscape
New plant-based materials represent an exciting development in footwear manufacturing. However, they are often not a one-to-one replacement for traditional leather. While their properties are constantly improving, they may not yet fully replicate the proven long-term durability and moulding capabilities of leather. It’s important to recognise these materials for what they are: innovative, non-animal-derived options with their own set of unique strengths and applications. As yet and despite investigations, we have yet to see any such plant-based materials suitable for footwear uppers in the safety sector.

A Fundamental Disconnect
The terms “vegan” and “leather” are a fundamental contradiction. One refers to a natural product from an animal, while the other is a philosophy built on avoiding animal products. We believe that to call a man-made or plant-based material “leather” is a disservice to the consumer and to the unique, natural properties of genuine leather itself.
Our Commitment to Quality and Choice
At Rock Fall UK, we believe in providing our customers across the UK and Europe with a choice of materials to match their specific needs, whether for a particular end-use, a lifestyle choice, or personal preference. Our range includes certified vegan footwear and premium leather shoes where the leather sourced is from reputable, certified tanneries, all with a focus on high-level environmental standards and traceability.
When you choose our leather footwear, you are selecting a material known for its natural breathability, durability, and comfort — qualities that make it a core and valuable part of our range.
Innovation and Sustainable Alternatives
Equally, we recognise the benefits of modern, man-made materials. We use a variety of alternatives, including PU, recycled synthetic textiles, bio-based yarns, and bio-based PU. These materials offer distinct advantages, especially in safety footwear, where their inherent water resistance, chemical protection, and excellent scuff resistance provide exceptional durability.
Transparency and Choice at Rock Fall UK
By offering a diverse range of footwear and being transparent about our materials, we ensure our customers have access to the right product for the job. Our goal is not for one material to substitute for another, but for each to complement our full range, giving you the best of both worlds.
So while other brands might be talking about “vegan leather”, we’ll stick to talking about what our shoes are actually made of — from our base in Derbyshire, serving professionals across the UK and beyond.
