How does Ultimate Visibility safety footwear work?
The product is engineered with advanced Coats® Signal Lucence phosphorescent technology that’s self-charging and thus battery-free. Phosphorescence is a type of photoluminescence: 1. The material absorbs energy from direct sunlight, UV light, or artificial light 2. Electrons in the material become ‘excited’ and move to a higher energy state 3. Instead of immediately releasing the energy (like fluorescence does), the electrons get trapped in a highly stable state 4. The trapped energy is then slowly released as visible light This delayed emission is what creates the long-lasting afterglow for up to 8 hours. When there is no light source or reduced light, phosphorescence is highly visible.
How long does it take to charge up Ultimate Visibility safety footwear?
Just 5-minutes of natural sunlight charging delivers 8 hours of continuous visibility. In the absence of natural light, artificial light is used that takes 10-minutes to deliver a full charge. A UV light source can also be used as an effective charging method. Does Ultimate Visibility safety footwear have to be plugged in to charge?
Never, because it’s a light-driven, battery-free, and wire-free solution. The footwear panels are self-charging at different rates according to the form of light available – with natural sunlight being the fastest.
How important is it to clean Ultimate Visibility safety footwear?
Like lights on a car, a build-up of dirt makes them less effective. The same goes for Ultimate Visibility safety footwear. The cleaner it’s kept, the more effective it is.

Is Coats® Signal™ Lucence™ technology manufactured to a standard?
Yes, it’s manufactured to the internationally recognised standard Din 67510-1 that covers phosphorescent pigments and products. It ensures that glow-in-the-dark photoluminescent materials remain visible long enough to assist people during low-light or blackout conditions.
Is Coats® Signal™ Lucence™ material renewable?
The product can be charged by using renewable energy (the sun) and doesn’t use batteries.
Is Coats® Signal™ Lucence™ chemically safe?
The product passes OEKO-TEX 100 Standard Class 2, which means: It’s safe for everyday wear against the skin It meets international safety thresholds for chemicals It’s been independently tested by certified labs It doesn’t present any toxicological risk
Does not using the product for a significant length of time have any negative consequences?
Not at all. The special pigments used are not affected by non-charge. There are examples of this where material tapes have been stored in the dark for over 7 years and haven’t been charged during that period. They still work as new.
